Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord was developed and published by Sir-Tech for the Apple II PC in September 1981. Due to the success of this first-person RPG, it was ported to multiple other PC systems popular throughout the world in that era. The game’s translation of role-playing into video game form is incredibly influential, and lead to a successful series of sequels throughout the next two decades.

Digital Eclipse developed and published a 3D remake of Wizardry for Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC on May 23rd, 2024. While the game runs on the original program’s source code, the visuals have been updated to modern standards, and a few gameplay enhancements, such as an auto-map, have been added.

The original game lacked a soundtrack, but this remake of Wizardry has an excellent score composed by Winifred Phillips, who has composed music for games such as God of War (2005) and Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. Her Wizardry soundtrack brings an atmospheric medieval flair, with multiple instruments associated with the Middle Ages.

The CD soundtrack of Wizardry is being released by SUPERDELUXE on November 21st, 2024. While this is a Japanese release, SUPERDELUXE does ship globally with the WorldShopping service.

For an excellent interview with Phillips on her production of this impressive soundtrack, I recommend this video by The Crawl (no affiliation).
