13 Sentinels Remix Album by Original Sound Team available on CD

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was released by developer Vanillaware for the Playstation 4 on November 28th, 2019 in Japan, and September 22, 2020 in the rest of the world. The game is a unique blend of real time strategy battles and narrative driven, side scrolling adventure. The game continues the Vanillaware tradition of amazing art and character design, while being more story driven than their previous side scrolling beat ‘em ups like Odin Sphere and Dragon’s Crown. In a year that saw the release of a new generation of consoles, 13 Sentinels was an underappreciated game of 2020. Despite the hype of PS5 and Series X/S, 13 Sentinels made the list for one of the top games of 2020 at multiple publications, such as US Gamer, Polygon, Kotaku, and The Gamer.

The soundtrack for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was composed by the amazing team at Basiscape, an independent company that specializes in video game music. I am most familiar with the company from the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre, which features rearranged tracks by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata. Basiscape has composed the soundtracks for other classic games such as Final Fantasy XII, Valkyria Chronicles, and most Vanillware games.

The same sound team that composed the original soundtrack for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim have revisited the game and produced a remix album entitled The Branch. Expanding upon the original four disc soundtrack to the game, director Yoshimi Kudo and the rest of the team at Basiscape, have created an expanded musical take on the original game’s soundtrack, with another CD of 14 tracks. Whether you have played the game or not (and you should), you should take a listen to these soundtracks.
