Collector’s Edition of Vanillaware’s SRPG Unicorn Overlord to Include Two-Disc 16-bit Arranged Album

Unicorn Overlord is a strategy RPG set to be released on March 8th, 2024 by the developer Vanillaware. The game features a blend of overworld exploration and real time combat that is reminiscent of Ogre Battle 64. Unicorn Overlord features Vanillaware's signature hand-drawn art style and will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch.

Another feature of Vanillaware games are their amazing soundtracks composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto and his studio Basiscape. Not only are Basiscape responsible for the critically acclaimed music in prior Vanillaware games, like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, but Sakimoto has also worked on numerous strategy game soundtracks, like Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Ogre Battle 64. Sakimoto will no doubt provide an epic score to Unicorn Overlord.

A Collector’s Edition of Unicorn Overlord has been announced that includes a variety of bonuses like an art book. The Collector’s Edition will also include a two-disc CD soundtrack. The Japanese description of the Collector’s Edition describes the album describes as a “16-bit Arranged Music Album”, and this text is visible on the album cover of the North American key advertising.

The developers have stated that “1990’s” and “16-bit” are some of the key terms that inspired the game. Their goal is to recapture the feel of strategy RPGs from that era, but with the modern 2D art capabilities of Vanillaware. A bonus collection of retro themed arrangements is consistent with those themes. Given the outstanding track record Sakimoto and Basiscape have in this genre, this bonus soundtrack is a key reason to consider getting the Collector’s Edition of Unicorn Overlord.
