Sea of Stars is a 2D turn-based RPG developed and published by Sabotage Studio on August 29th, 2023 for the PC, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Sabatoge Studio, an independent studio, which had previously released the critically acclaimed 2D platformer, The Messenger, cited classic 16-bit era RPGs as inspirations for Sea of Stars. The game was critically praised upon its release, and won multiple awards, including Best Independent Game at The Game Awards.

Part of the acclaim that Sea of Stars received upon its release was for its soundtrack, composed by Eric W. Brown, the same composer for The Messenger. Some of the songs hearken back to hits from The Messenger’s soundtrack, as the two games share a universe. Just like the visuals, the entire soundtrack evokes the best of the Super Nintendo era RPGs. Yasunori Mitsuda, composer for Chrono Trigger, even contributed some songs to the soundtrack.

iam8bit has announced pre-orders for a two-disc vinyl for Sea of Stars, featuring songs by both Eric W. Brown and Yasunori Mitsuda. The vinyl will come with the complete digital version of the soundtrack, and album art by the game’s concept artist, Bryce Kho. It is scheduled to ship Q3 2024.
